ACTA ZOOLOGICA ACADEMIAE SCIENT1ARUM HUNGARICAE XXIII. 3-4 1977 p. 427 451 REVISION OF SYMPHYLAX (HETEROPTERA: COLOBATHRISTIDAE) lly P. §TYS (Received 19 March, 1976) Taxonomy of the Indo-Malayan genus Symphylax Horváth is revised. Symphylax ghaurii sp. n. and S. confluens borneensis subsp. n. are described; S. confluens confluens Horv., S. curvispinu Horv., S. handschini KormS. picticollis Horv. and S. walshi Honv. are redescribed. Male genitalia and female terminalia are described and illustrated for all species. Three keyes based on somatic characters, male genitalia and female terminalia, respectively, are provided. Fifth instar nymph of S. picticollis Horv. is described and its unique modification of the opening of first abdominal gland is discussed. Only four papers have so far contributed to our knowledge of the taxonomy of the second largest Oriental genus of Colohathristidae, Symphylax Horváth. Horváth (1904) described the genus for Symphylax picticollis Horv. and its two “varieties”, blandus Horv. and confluens Horv.; later (1912) he added a second species, S. curvispina Horv. Kormilev (1953) described two more species, S. handschini Korm. and S. walshi Korm. Ghauri (1968) redescrihed the genus and its type-species, and described two new species (S. musiphthora Ghauri and S. tvallacei Ghauri, the former being a pest of Musa textilis Nee in Sahab), and tentatively appreciated S. confluens Horv. as a distinct species and provided a key; he also first described the male and female genitalia of the three species studied in detai', used them as diagnostic characters and stressed the particular importance of the shape of hypandrium. I have attempted to gather all available material of the genus (with the exception of the sufficiently characterized species Symphylax musiphthora and S. wallacei), to provide adeejuate diagnoses of the individual species and to construct a workable key. All relevant type-material has been examined, the only exception being that of Symphylax picticollis var. blandus; unfortunately, I have not been able to locate and examine the material of some species reported by Horváth (1904) from non-typical areas and possibly representing undescribcd texa. One new species and one new subspecies are described, and male genitalia are described and illustrated for all the species examined. In species where also females were available, also their terminalia providing still better diagnostic characters are described and illustrated. Three separate keys based on somatic, male and female characters, respectively, have been prepared; Acta Zoologien Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 23t 1977
