IN MEMORIAM - Komjáthy Oszkár - Nemeskéri-Kiss Sándor - Páldy Géza - Schenk Henrik - Sziráczky Sándor

of birds, particularly in the surroundings of Jászberény. Died at Tatabánya on July 15th 1957. — Sándor Nemeskéri-Kiss bom in Göd on May 14th 1884. He enjoyed popularity by his charming short stories and books on hunting and those who knew his him personally, were attracted by his hearty humour. In his last years he got in close contact with our Institution, and we owe to him splendid translations. Died in Budapest on April 11th 1958. — Géza Páldy born at Feketeardó on April 1st 1882. He was a railway official in Temesvár when he began his ornithological activity by studying waterbirds in 1912. He had great merits in propagating birdprotection. He had a great organizing ability. ,,Bird protection Days” at Pécs, equipments for the protection of birds installed in the parks of the same town and in frequented spots of the Mecsek, are aU due to his organising activity. He also helped to run the only Hungarian factory for manufacturing artificial nestingboxes. He furthered applied ornithology by constructing new and prettier models of bird-feeders and protecting appliances. Died in Pécs on September 5th 1956. — Henrik Schenk bom at Óverbász on Febmary 23rd 1879. Hehas been taught and advised on his ornithological studies by his brother, director of the Ornithological Institute. He lived on the bank of the Ferenc-Canal, where his garden, bordering a reed bed, offered him an opportunity to make interesting ornithological observations. He learned at our Institute how to stuff birds and worked as preparator at Óverbász. Thus a great many different birdspecies passed through his hands, from the whole Bácska and he enriched our collection with numerous valuable specimens (Cettia, Hippolais pallida etc.). The first Cettia, Dendrocopos syriaeus etc. species of our Insti­tute were also donated by him. He regularly published in ,, Aquila” and made obser­vations on the migration of birds. He enriched the bromatological coHection of the Institute by many thousands of stomach contents. World War II swept him to Ger­many, here he settled down, first in Göttingen (1944—54), then in Karlsruhe, where he carried on his ornithological activity. Died on March 16th 1958 in Karlsruhe.— Sándor Sziráczky bom at Szarvas on October 15th 1901. He had great merits in ornitho­logical research, particularly by ringing raptorial birds and by studying the ornis of the ricefields and of sodaic ground. Died in Budapest, on May 11th 1957. 330
