Az USA-ban mindeddig nem okozott veszélyt a mérgezett olasz bor. A pancsolás múlt év végén történt, az olcsó tömegben eladott borba metilaloholt kevertek a csalók, akik Olaszországban így 20 ember gyilkosává váltak. De az évi 250 millió dolláros olasz bortermelésnek a botrány elmondhatatlan károkat okozott. Az amerikaiak korábban a tömény szesz fogyasztói az utolsó 2 évtizedben borkedvelőkké váltak és kedvencük éppen az olasz fehér bor volt. Az olcsóbb fajtából, mint a Frascati, Piedmond és Észak- Olaszország száraz fehér borai, ezek mind hatalmas piacra találtak az USA-ban. A külföldi borok behozatalának 60 %-a Olaszországból jött az Államokba, 40 % Franciaországból, 30 % Németországból és 10 % egyébünnen külföldről. Ebbe a kategóriába tartoznak a magyar borok is. Az olasz borbotrány előtt az idei év elején a külföldi behozatalba visszaesés mutatkozott. Részben a dollár vásárló erejének esése miatt, részben pedig mert az amerikaiak megint egyszer felfedezték, hogy saját boraik Kaliforniából és New Yorkból vetekednek a legjobb külföldi behozatallal. Az olasz borbotrány tovább fog ártani a külföldi behozatalnak és még jobban az olasz exportnak.
