Acta Ethnographica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, Tomus 28 (1 —4), pp. 1 — 3 (1979) GYULA ORTUTAY Gyula Ortutay, academician, died on March 22, 1978 at the age of sixtyeight after a long, patiently suffered illness. He was the director of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Ethnographical Institute, a public figure who held many offices and who was awarded the Hungarian People's Republic's State Prise, recipient of important Hungarian and international distinctions, an outstanding scholar in Hungarian folkloristics, and the professor of the Folklore Department of Budapest's Eötvös Loránd University. He was the editor in chief of our periodical, the Acta Ethnographica, from the time of its first appearance in 1950. With the aid of his direction, advice and work our periodical gained international recognition in the discipline during its first 25 years of publication. We expressed our appreciation of his activity by dedicating the XIXth volume of our periodical, which appeared in 1970, to the celebration of his sixtieth birth day. We treasure his memory and in this spirit continue the work he began. The Editorial Board 1910-1978 Acta Ethnographica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 28, 1979
