MUSEUM OF THE SERBIAN GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH AT SZENTENDRE ARCHITECT: ÉVA CZUPPON INTERIOR ARCHITECT: ZSUZSA SZŰTS The museum is located behind the bishop’s residence on a plot belonging to the Serbian Greek Orthodox Bishopric of Buda. The plot is part of the block bordered by Engels utca, Alkotmány utca, Avakumovics köz and Hunyadi utca. The Serbian Greek Orthodox Episcopal Church built in the 18th century and the reconstructed and enlarged museum can be reached from the entrance located on the corner of Alkotmány utca and Engels utca. In the Alkotmány utca corner of the plot, as part of the bordering wall, the 17th century patriarch’s residence remained as the oldest part of the complex. The museum building was built around 1900 from the two 17-19 th century remains of the old bishop’s residence into an L-shaped building, the two wings of different age meeting at a 45° angle. The facades reflected the taste of the beginning of the century. There were no presentable decorations left on the walls. Up to the end of the 1950s the southern wing accomodated offices, archives and guest rooms, the northern wing was occupied by the bishop’s kitchen and some utility rooms. The exhibition rooms were developed in 1963-64 with a new entrance from Engels utca. The timber ceiling above them collapsed owing to a damage in the roof tiling so the exhibition was closed. The Ministry of Culture decided to have the museum building reconstructed in 1986. The program asked for a 300 m2 enlargement of the original area so even the first design sketches were made for an enlarged single story building with an attic. The main task of the design was to create a building which was in harmony with its environment, with exhibition rooms worthy of their exhibited material and the separation of the different functions (permanent exhibition, library and 2 apartments) had to be solved, too. The main walls of the L-shaped system remained. Enlargement was provided by doubling the wings and the connecting space between them with a dividing zone between the old and new parts. The connection of these rooms gives the feeling of an interior space much bigger than it looks from the outside. The old wall was turned into pillars and so an octogonal space was created on the ground floor and in the attic as well. Originally, the two wings of the L-shape were of different width in order to provide the symmetrical connection to the central space and also to be able to build a staircase according to the regulations, the northern wing had to be widenes. This widening also solved the problem of making a roof with an unbroken ridge-line. The pillar and tympanum motives of the entrances in the middle of the wings remained. GÖRÖGKELETI SZERB EGYHÁZMŰVÉSZETI MÚZEUM, SZENTENDRE ÉPÍTÉSZ: CZUPPON ÉVA Belsőépítész: Szűts Zsuzsa: statikus: Serly Imre: gépész: Földes László; elektromos tervező: Boros Iván, Fábrás György; kerttervező: Herczeg Ágnes; tervező cég: Kommunális Beruházási Vállalat; generál kivitelező: UNISZER Szerelőipari Kft.; a beruházás költsége: 62.1 mFt. A Művelődési Minisztérium megbízásából 1986-ban készítettük el a Szerb Egyházművészeti Múzeum tanulmánytervét. A tanulmányterv Vujicsics D. Stoján, a Szerb Egyházművészeti és Tudományos Gyűjtemény igazgatója által összeállított tervezési program figyelembevételével készült. Szentendre Város Műemléki Albizottsága a tanulmánytervet elfogadta, és az 1988 márciusában bemutatott munkaközi engedélyezési tervek már tartalmazták a jegyzőkönyvben rögzített tervezési szempontokat. A kiviteli tervdokumentáció már a fővállalkozói versenyfelhívást megnyerő UNISZER Szerelőipari Kft. megbízásából készült 1989. március végi határidőre. Az épület a Budai Görögkeleti Szerb Püspökség tulajdonában lévő telken fekszik, a püspöki rezidencia épülete mögött. A telek az Engels utca, Alkotmány utca, Avakumovics köz, Hunyadi utca által határolt tömb része. Az eredetileg osztott telekrészeket a környezet rendezésénél összenyitottuk.
