HUNGARIAN POST OFFICE CENTRE AND WORKS IN BUDAÖRS ARCHITECTS: ISTVÁN JANÁKY and LÁSZLÓ MEDITZ This piece of ground of the Hungarian Post office world have been more suitable for dwelling or recreational purposes than as an industrial site, due to its position, configuration of the terrain and landscape relations. But unfortunately it is bordered on both longer sides by a railway and motorway. This restraint, coupled with the proprietary rights of the Post office, brought the final decision to establish a new complex here with the cable plant, high storehouse and offset printing works, plus the new central office building. In the first stage of the construction the cableplant with workshops and general store-rooms had to be finalised. Cable drums roll easily, therefore most of the site - 23 000 rn had to be levelled. The level difference, sometimes by 15 meters, sometimes up to 23 meters, resulted in 52 000 n? of excavation work. (At the site of the future store-house and printing works much less digging is expected.) The principle of the architectural conception was to form three different characters with the big buildings, (workshops, store-hose, printing works) because they have very different functions, execution times, structures and forms. We can gain a polyfonic harmony in contrast to the former homogeneous way of design, which was typical mainly in industrial buildings. The workshop building is constructed with a 10 meter- span steel-construction, prefabricated wallpanels and plastered brickwork wings. The store-house is a combination of reinforced concrete units and a self-supported steel construction, carrying the roof and the metalic facade as well. The printing house is planed to be a monolithic concrete superstucture completed with sandwich-brickwork, covered with zinc-sheets and opened with wooden windows, doors and wallpanels. The architects did not stick rigidly to designing the ancillary buildings in a strictly unified manner, so each of them -goods-gate-keepers office, boiler-house, substation, etc - was a separate task from both financial and design viewpoints. A Posta 7 hektáros területe - fekvése, domborzata, táji kapcsolatai miatt - inkább volna alkalmas lakásépítés, kemping, vagy valami hasonló céljára, mint ipartelepítésre. Az a helyzet azonban, hogy a területet éppen a hosszú oldalainál közút és vasút szegélyezi. Ez a tény, valamint a birtokon belüliség a Postát mégis arra a konok álláspontra juttatta, hogy kábeltelepét, magasraktárát és új ofszet nyomdáját e helyre költöztesse, egy központi irodaépülettel együtt. Az első ütemben a kábeltelepet és a hozzá tartozó, általános raktározást és a kábelekkel való manipulációt szolgáló műhelyépületet kellett megvalósítani. A kábeldobok könnyen gurulnak, ezért a terület nagy részét, 23 000 m-t vízszintesre kellett rendezni, ami a telken belüli 15, néhol 23 méteres szintkülönbségek miatt 52 000 m3 földmunkát eredményezett. (A leendő magasraktár és nyomda területén már jóval kevesebb tereprendezés várható.)
