JOSEP IW SUBIRACHS. Barcelona, 1927. He obtained a scholarship from the French Institute in Barcelona in 1951 to study in Paris. He won the «Jazz Saloon» first prize for sculpture in 1953. He exhibited in the 3rd and 6th Middelheim International Sculpture Biennials in Antwerp. In 1957 he did a sculpture for the Mundet Gardens and this was the first abstract work to be located on public grounds in Barcelona. He was awarded the Bronze Medal in the 2nd Ale­xandria Biennial. In 1958 he was awarded the Grand Prix St. George of the Provincial Govern­ment of Barcelona and the - Julio González» Prize of the Barcelona Art Chamber. In 1959 he did a relief for the new Barcelona Law Faculty and a monumental sculpture in the Paseo Nacional, in Barcelona also. In 1961 he did the great work of the Sanctuary of the «Virgen del Camino» in León, and the park sculpture of the Market Center in. Dallas (U.S.A.). In 1963 he did the monument to the flood victims of the Vallès, in Rubi (Barcelona) and the monument to Monturiol in Barcelona. In 1966 he took part in the «Jeune Sculpture» in the Rodin Museum in Paris and in the «Drawing by sculptors» exhibition in the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York. He did a further series of monumental works in 1965 and following years: International Trade Monument, in Dallas; great monument to the XIX Olympic Games in Mexico, D.F.; «Homage to Barcelona» monument in Montjui'c, Barcelona; the fronts of the new City Hall of Barcelona, the sculpture «On the other side of the wall» in the open air museum in the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid. In 1958 he had a special room in the XXXIV Venice Biennial, in «Art Espagnol d'Aujourd'hui» in the Rath Museum, Geneva, «Contemporary Spanish Art» in the National Gallery of Canada and several American cities. He also took part in «Dix Artistes Contemporains» in the Petit Palais, Geneva. In 1970, he exhibited in the «El pequeno bronce» (Small Bronze) International exhibition in the Contemporary Art Museum of Madrid; in 1974 he took part in the exhibition organized by the Fundación March and shown in several Spanish and European cities; in 1974 he was awarded the Barcelona Critics' Prize to the best exhibition held in 1973. He also exhibited in the Biennale Internationale d'Art, in Menton. In 1975 he took part in the III Inter­national Biennial of Small Sculptures in Budapest. Other monuments in Barcelona, outstand­ing among which is the bronze gate for the Palace of the Old Kings of Aragon. In 1976 he finished the decoration of the loggia of the Palau de la Generalität de Catalunya, Barcelona, he also took part in the exhibition «Amnistia i Drets Humans», in the Fundació Joan Miró, in Barcelona, and was selected to exhibit in the Room dedicated to Spain in the Basel 7'76 International Art Fair. In 1977 he has been named Corresponding Member of the Hispanic Society of America, New York. In 1978 he exhibited in the «1ère. Triennale Européenne de Sculpture», in the Jardins du Palais-Royal, in Paris. In 1979 he takes part in «Présence contemporaine de la Sculp­ture», at Brest and carries out the frontspiece in the façade of the new train station of Sants (Central) in Barcelona. In 1980 he participates in the exposition «Centenaire de Daumm au Japon» in the Modem Art Museum at Wokkaïdo (Japan) and is elected member of the Real Academia de Bellas Aries de Sant Jordi (Barcelona). In 1981 he participates in the exposition «La Catalogne Aujourd’hui» held at the Unesco Palace in Paris.
