Most itthon kalandozik az obsitos, a budapesti Operaház vörös szalonjában. Losonczi Miklós művészettörténész Our history, so full of perils, dramas, afflictions, has been maintained in no small degree by the carefully guarded and preserved popular humour. Around the campfires of the 17th and 18th century insurrectionists, the innumerable Csinom Palkós, facing but not fearing death, now and then instinctively began to dance, and returning from the distant "Majland", thousands of warriors cheered up their public by animating fibs. Háry János is the people itself, hero of a millennium - the victorious merriness. János Garay was a renowned poet of the 19th century, but his indomitable figure, Háry János is immortal. This is due in the first place to Kodály, whose musical play strengthened the supporting pillars of the epic poem. And by his Háry-illustrations Victor Varga has become not only a worthy - attentive and imaginative - companion of Garay and Kodály, but by the impetuosity of his dance-scenes and the noble restraint of his culture, using new lines of new laws has created a new serenity. His vigorous drawings follow the story in a very good tempo. It is particular/ captivating how he transposes the humuor of the play: Eastern eggs fall from the guns of general Crucifix, among the rich patterns of Háry's frogged pelisse the main front of the Notre-Dame can be vaguely seen, Örzse feeds assiduously the Austrian double-eagle... Varga's sense of style is conspicuous. His grapic solutions are faciles and elegants. His incessantly growing culture is an organic part of his work. Consequently, his compositions give the impression of being quite natural, because they are graphic proverbs. And it was also natural that when the operahouses of three French cities - Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse - billed Kodály's musical play, they organized exhibitions of Varga's Háry-illustrations too, with resounding success. Now the old soldier is at home again, telling his adventures in the red salon of the Budapest opera-house. A place where he is also "in his place", since the story of the play is connected with the Vienna Burg and our Opera-house is architecturally connected with Vienna. Moreover, we can see a progress, an ultimate summing-up: Victor Varga who was the designer of the complete Kodály-edition as well and created three disk-covers for "Háry János", has inserted the graphic idea of the last one in his series too: here is the proud hussar who sticks to his moustache the world-conquering Napoleon! A better visual expression of this theme namely was not born yet. Miklós Losonczi art historian VICTOR VARGA'S HÁRY-ILLUSTRATIONS
