The Chartered Society of Designers - Annual Review (London, 1991)

Working for the profession continued During the year the Society's series of lectures and debates has focused on a diverse, but always stimulating, range of design issues. Speakers from design practices, educational institutions and government departments have contributed to a lively programme of debate, including the following events : • Green lighting • Stamp design • Typography debate • Selame Design: how to become a recession-proof designer • Apple Computer: new technologies • Naomi Gornick on Design Management • The new BT corporate identity (supported by BT) • Victor Papanek (in conjunction with the Ecological Design Association) • The work of the late Hans Schleger • Graphic design has no conscience: a debate Full information on forthcoming events is always available from Ian Smith, CSD Projects Manager. Professional services The Society has an ongoing policy to provide a range of professional and business services to members. In 1991 the CSD, in collaboration with the Design Business Association, established a comprehensive Professional Indemnity Insurance scheme for the design profession, through brokers Bowring, Marsh & McLennen. The highly successful scheme offers appropriate cover to all design practices, whether sole traders or larger companies, at competitive rates further enhanced by a discount structure for members of either or both organisation. Full information on the Professional Indemnity scheme is available from Lucy de Bay in the CSD's Information Department. The Society continues to run its established range of services, including discounted health insurance, credit checking and debt collection facilities and a personal pension plan. 1991 also saw the introduction of a CSD affinity Mastercard, issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The card offers members a strong range of benefits and provides much needed income for the Society itself. Full details are available from the PA to the Director. Exhibitions The CSD participates in a number of trade and public exhibitions, providing information, and on occasion organising related events and seminars. 1991 saw the Society at the CICE 91 and IDI shows. The annual New Designers exhibition, organised by the Business Design Centre in Islington, North London, is presented in association with the CSD. In 1991 the exhibition, opened by the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon John Major MP, brought together the work of outstanding graduate designers from throughout the UK. The Society's acclaimed information stand was designed by three young designers working under the collective name Metalhouse, and was in itself a highlight of the exhibition.
