(A “szabad várossá” tett Nyugat Berlin, — mondotta, — valószínűleg egytől lenne csupán megvédve: a szabadságtól.) Az US hadsereg, — úgymond, — 17 rakétatípussal rendelkezik. 11 rakétatípus ez évben készül el, 13 pedig jelenleg áll kísérletezés alatt. Hangsúlyozta, hogy szövetségeseink száma 15. Ezek 200- nál több földi hadosztállyal, 30,000 harcirepülőgéppel és 2500 haditengerészeti egységgel járulnak hozzá a US felkészültségéhez. Előző számunkban ismertettük Eisenhower sajtónyilatkozatát. Eszerint a 175 hadosztályt kitevő Szovjet hadsereggel szemben, a nyugati szövetségesek, belátható tervezett berlini Szovjetagresszióval szemben harcot hirdetett meg. Ismertette az Egyesült Államok katonai felkészültségét. A különböző fegyvernemek szupermodern felszerelését, az atomfelkészülést és a rakéta fegyvereket is, időn belül, megfelelő erőt állítani képtelenek. Háború esetén, így földi hadviselésről szó nem lehet.. Miután a szövetségesek földi ereje tehát (Az Egyesült Államokat is beleértve), megközelíti (vagy talán túl is haladja) a 250 hadosztályt, az Elnök előző megállapításai nyilván tévesek. Az egyszerű számtan szerint is, 250, 75-tel több, mint 175. A helyreigazítás, illetékes hely (McElroy véderő miniszter) részéről már meg is történt. Tributes to the extent of Communist activity on behalf of its own line is found in the many voices within America, represented by editorials in the press and by letters to our newspapers, echoing, the Communist “warnings” about the sad fate of the United States if we did nőt surrender in the Far Kast. No wonder that the Red organ, rejoiced in what has happened in 1958 fór the Comunist cause. Since the Communists always pretend to speak fór “the people”, this is represented by the leading editor - ial entitled A Year Of The People. The Red organ applauds, with almost lyrical tone, the continued existence of the Soviet dictatorship in Soviet Russia and in Red China, and in generál declares': “People — the people of the socialist countries of Europe, working together, were busy advancing their economic goal”. Then, expressing, its delight at the successes of the Communist line, The Worker gives this distorted view of specific world affairs: . .“People — the socialist people of Hungary — having foiled the bloody plot of the Western imperialist-inspired Nagys, repaired the vast damages wrought by the traitors and strode once more along the socialist path to the future in 1958. “People — the hundreds of millions in the rapidly shrinking capitalist world — joined with the hundreds of millions in the expanding socialist world and the hundreds of millions in the new nations in 1958 to hold back the enemies of the people, our own W'all Street imperialists, from unleashing the dogs of war against the newly independent nations of the Middle East, over wrongfully held Matsu and Quemoy, through adventurous maneuvering.s over the West Berlin situation.” You wijl observe how arrogant the Communists are in their assessment of what happened in Hungary, how the revolt of the people is represented as “the bloody plot of the Western imperialist-inspired Nagys”. You will alsó note the contempt fór the United States expressed in the calm assurance that Red Hungary, crushed by Soviet bombs and bullets, is now moving “once more along the socialist path to the future”. You will alsó note how the Communists twist history fór their own purposes, misrepresenting the bombing of Quemoy and Matsu and the Soviet demands on West Berlin as “our own Wall Street imperialists — unleashing the dogs of war”. I think that Popé Pius XI in his classical encyclical letter on Communistm asked the question: How is it possible that Communism, long since rejected scientifically, proved erroneous by experience and demonstrated as atheistic, merciless, a curse upon mankind, how is it that such a system could spread so rapidly in all parts of the world? The explanation lies in the fact that too few have been able to grasp the natúré of Communism. Within forty years about onethird of the population of this earth have been swept behind the írón Curtain. It is unfortunately still true that few people, especially in our own country, understand what Communism is, what are its techniques, its methods, its line. The greatest asset the Communists have at the present time is nőt the hydrogen bomb, certainly nőt Soviet satellites, bút ignorance of their tactics, strategy and objectives. We have lost much to the Communist line in the pást year. I pray that we shall be a little more vigilant, a little more pro- American and pro-God throughout the New Year. feel sure, will show. Whith the Italian campaign came the first chili wind of, “Policy”. Allies now had to be considered, and Montgomery did nőt care fór this. Soon he was transfered to England to command the 21st Army Group fór the Invasion of Francé, and here he was to encounter the full blast of those International Considerations, which in his opinion interfered with the efficient pursuit of the war. As a Diplomát he was singularly unqualified; his prickly character, arrog,ance and cock. sureness earned him enemies, and went down badly in the diplomatic atmosphere of the politico-military councils in London. Much has been written about the invasion of Europe and the march to Berlin. Charges and counter-charges have been made, and this is no time to examine them. Given an objective, and what he considered to be the proper matériái means of achieving it, Field-Marshal Montg.omery was entirely confident of his own ability, and, in fact, did what he set out to do. Latterly, he was unable to understand why his own simple and practical plans, which he knew were right, were scrapped in favour of others, which he knew were wrong, just on the basis of political or diplomatic expediency.
