The affair seemed to develop intő a local war that intended to liquidate the Serb Pan-Slavism, bút the great protector, Russia, naturally pút its hands intő the affair and as a consequence the European atmosphere — fiiled with the firedamp of war, ignited. In tlhis struggle the Pan-Slav idea suffers complete military defeat and the great power resérvoir of Pan-Slavism temporaly collapses.— The war, that is turning more and more intő a German-Eng,lish showndown, is won by the Western great powers who — nőt knowing what to do with Central Europe, that is far away from them, — break it intő pieces and throw it as spoils right intő the lap of the Pan-Slav ideas. In Central- and Eastern-Europe and the Balkans a new and victorious Slavic world of five Slav states is wrought of blood, Steel, tears and lies and through them the problem of the “hammmer and sickle” of the Slavic mán in rising, unobserved and slowly behind the dead letters of Versailles, growing intő a horrible nightmare of mankind during the subsequent fourty years. This is the quintessence of the history of the pást four decades; the concomitant deeds and theories are only a stejiping point of bloodthirst and unscrupulousness. (To be cont.) DEAD LETTERS (Cont. írom page 1) branded the peace treaties “dead letiters” and the apostolié declaration is just as concise and meaningful as it is deep and true, because the “dead letters” constitute nőt only negative ineffectiveness bút alsó contain positive cadaverin the decomposed products of which bring upon mankind the plagues of war and destruction. The most disheartening of all this is that although the world is made up mostly of honest people of good intentions wlio individually and as a malter of principle and on morál grounds consider all injustice and lawlessness intolerable yet, collectively they stubbornly r^fuse to recognize the fact Uhut the lawlessness and injustice practiced by them, when acting as their own judges and perpetrated against the socalled defeated nations, are intolerable facts that drive people intő new wars, the guilty and innocent ones alike; that bloodshed, destruction and catastrophes are nőt caused by the inclination and fighting spirit of certain nations — as is so preferentially believed and made to believe by the really responsible former victors — instead of realizing their own mistakes every time a new war brakes out, bút quickly multiplying bacteria of indignation, misunderstanding and cadaverin infecting the organism of mankind, emanating írom the “dead letters” of the peace-treaties. Is there a rádiónál mind, pure heart and sober sense of justice thafj would nőt know that in the final analysis the horrors of World War II were caused by the cadaverin, amanating írom the dead letters of the peace-treaties of Versailles? Is there anyone who does nőt reeognize behind the yellow fogs of töday’s stifling atmosphere the grim outlines of Versailles? Is there any politician who does nőt begin the gravely feverish case-history of Europe ait the bloody operating table of Briand, Clemenceau, Wilson, Masaryk, Benesh and his colleagues? Who does nőt see the four decadeold syllogism of errors and lies between the barren negativity of gluttony and reveng.e of Versailles and the horrible nihilism of the unopposably approaching átomic war? We are living in the age of “one world”, writes Wendell Willkie, and conflicts transform intő world wars. And fór every new war those at the helm are responsible, those who are always the victors of the previous wars. This we nTust confirm when we noite that affér World War II — that broke out because of Versailles in Central Europe — the peace signed at Paris has again repeated the dispositions of Versailles that dealt with Central Europe. And when we observe this we again have to summarize the meaning of Versailles in order to see clearly why World War III will come upon the world. Using the word of the Germán generál, Jodl, it will come as in the church the prayer is concluded with an ii 11 * ámen . A Serb agent of the Pan-Slav Movement — that was financed by Russia who had aspirations to the Mediterranean Bea — murdered with two pistol-shots the Crown-Prince to the Austro-Hun- REMEMBERING FRANZ LISZT (Cont. from page 1) While on >a tour as a concert pianist, Liszt was disappointed to see that the concert hall of a small town was nearly empty except fór the town dignitaries. Affér playing a few pieces, Liszt shut the lid of the piano, rose from his bench, bowed and in a clear voice invited the audience to dinner. The extravaganza cost him only a few francs bút the following night was a sellout, the whole audience expecting, an invitation to diné with Liszt. Liszt wrote an article in which he demanded that Palestine should be acquired as a homestad fór the Jews and all of them exported thither. A few months la tér he récéi ved a visít from his friend and admirer, the eminent violoncellist, Havid Popper. “Whence and whither?” asked Liszt. “I am on my way to Jerusalem, dear master, in accordance with your wishes”, was the answer. * As the years passed, modern times and the fantasy of Hollywood created a movie which drew the following comments from the critics: “As a filmed piano recitál, “Song Without End” presents a program of exquisite music; as on account of Franz Liszt’s life, the movie never really depicts the passions it discusses.” (N.Y. Héráid Tribüné, Aug. 12, 1960.) And the New York Times, Aug. 12, 1960: “Franz Liszt could scarcely have suspected when he was creating that he was helpfully putting tiogether an album of Music-To- Make-A-Movie-By.” * At the close of the year, we are pleased to have reports on various musical events which took piacé in this country, in Europe and particularly in Hungary, commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt. In New York, our own Voice of Faith Rádió Choir dedicated its concert at Carnegie Recitál Hall to the choral works of the master. We now look forward to another year when more of his works will be performed and heard to the delight and enjoyment of all music lovers. Hungarians To The Mr. Diefenbaker Your Excellency, We learned with great satisfaction of your intention to bring a discussion on Soviet Colonialism behind the írón Curtain before the United Nations General Assembly. Your decision is strengthening again our hopes towards the liberation of Hungary, where our brethren still suffer as the victims of ruthless Soviet oppression. It is my honor to be able to express our grateful thanks to your and to assure you that we Canadians of Hungárián descent greatly appreciate your wise and just motion. The “Soviet Empire” Controls one third of the humán race. She maintains the largest prison of non-Russian nations in history. The overhelming majority of the subj ugatod nations behind the írón Curtain are the unwilling, prisoners of the regimes imposed upon them by brutal force. It is a well known fact it there were no Russian troops in these countries, people would never elect a Communist government. The same principle of national self-determination should be applied behind the írón Curtain as was aDnlied to Africans. who hever had a modern State or Western eufture. With internationally conti'olled self-determination nőt only Hungary would regain her freedom and independence bút the world would be saved from Soviet imperialistic threat. We sincerely wish and hope fhat your Excellency as Head of the Canadian Government will be successful in bringing Soviet Coloa nialism before the United Nations.
