A nemzeti föllendülés oly mértéke, mint amilyen nálunk tapasztalható, egyenesen kizárja a zsarnoksá gives sway to our national selfrespect since in this illu8trous meeting we greet a proof that the cultivated nations of both hemispheres begin to recognize and acknowledge our modest but earnest cultural endeavours. We are by no means conceited enough to receive this acknowledgement as our due. Only a few decennaries ago we have suffered the last shocks of that great historic tempest which for centuries has shaken this part of Europe. During the few years of undisturbed development which we have, since, enjoyed, we have done our best and profited accordingly, but could naturally not yet reach the scale of progress, recorded by other nations. In this sense we hail the circumstance, that the hygienic and demographic Congress has chosen our metropolis for this years meeting, as an encouragement to persist in the work we have commenced and strife as hitherto so forth and forth honestly and zealously for the great and hallowed goods of civilization. All our ambitions will be satisfied if our venerated visitors will part from us with the impression that our nation are on the right path in order to rise in time to the greatness of those peoples who are older in civilization, because Providence has protected them against difficulties like those we had to suffer. But we have — plainly spoken — still to own to another desire. It is our request that our guests may not limit their interest to our cultural progress, but also pay some attention to our political conditions. Base and calumnious malignity is continually at work to degrade our people in the minds of the cultured nations of the world. We are called intolerant tyrants and presented as oppressors of the nationalities living amongst us. The enlightened minds of scientific celebrities will be able to form their own opinion and be certain to find out soon the utter falsity of those statements. Such an amount of national sway and progress, which d'accomplir.
