Volume 5. Nr. 21. 2000/7. Summary Strange worlds? The Festival of the Eurpoean Union of Theatres was held in Budapest in Novebber, 2000. The first part of our issue deals with the most important performances of the festival. The most intriguing performance was the Meno Fortas Company’s Flamlet. István Sándor L. analyses Necrosius’ direction in depth. He shows how Shakespeare’s theatre of speech evolves to a sort of end-of-the-century gesamtkunstwerk. He talks about the nature of pictures used, the way props are used, and the peculiarities of acting. In essence he says that in spite of the complexity of its theatrical language the performance is exact and clear. He says: "The world where these instances occur is dark by nature. Even hte sky is against the people who live here. There is constant icy rain, htey live in eternal bad weather. The arrival of the Ghost only makes hteir torments more evident. He is the agent of Hell. He wants justice but only makes damnation more complete. He pulls everybody down to Hell with him." We also deal in depth with the production of Maly Theatre, Chekhov’s Play without a Name (Platonov), directed by Dogin. We asked our writers to take part in a game: to create a mental letter-chain. We sent the first writing on to another writer and then sent the answer and the original on to a third one to comment on them. Finally, in the opposite order all the mat4erial got back to the first person. That is how this ’debate’ concerning the many possibilies of comprehending Dogin’s prodiction. Our Festival segment is complete with an interview with Planchon and a review ofTeatrul Bulandra’s Turandot. In the criticism section Veronika Ágnes Tóth’s two writings talk about the work of young choreographers, who come from distinctly different backgrounds. While she misses courage and creativity in the studiowork of the Opera House dancers, in the work of the much less gualified youngsters trying their luck in the open competiton Inspiration she finds originality, playfullness and personal involvment. In the In Focus section Ádám Mestyán analyses the two performances showed in Trafo, in Budapest of the Random Dannce Company trilogy: Supphur 16 and Aeon. The writer of the essay connects the two selfcontained chorepgraphies by the actual bodies, lighcreated changing spaces and the continual metamorphosis of virtual elements. Strange worlds?
