Performance, ritual - contemporary art ln this issue we look into how the theatre innovations in the 6o's and 70’s live on in contemporary dance and theatre art. In our first column we explore the inspiring effect of the art of Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Crotowski and Eugenio Barba. Fanni Nánay writes about the Kantor Exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, which documents the neo-avant-garde artist’s and theatre innovator’s period between 1965 and 1975, and the performances produced by him at that time, including the happenings entitled Cricotage, Seaside Panorama, The Anatomy Lesson based on Rembrandt’s painting and The Letter. The other highly influential Polish theatre innovator in the 6o’s was Jerzy Grotowski, whose impact definitely inspired fringe theatre in Hungary too. Analysing the director’s ideal of theatre and attitude to actors, in her essay Eszter Horváth shares her insights on the spiritual links between Grotowski and Heidegger. The Polish artist considered the Italian Eugenio Barba his sole true disciple and inheritor, who established his independent company, the now world famous Odin Theatre, in Denmark. In November the company made a guest appearance in Budapest; they played six of their performances and held six work demonstrations. In connection with the guest appearance, in his article Balázs Perényi analyses the Odin work method, theatre conception and acting style. As part of the event, Paper Canoe by Eugenio Barba was published in Hungarian. The book is reviewed here by Nina Király. Our second column features the new performance of one of the most exciting figures in the contemporary art of dancing, often stirring a debate, Csaba Horváth. Similarly to the choreographer’s earlier works, Etna adds performance like solutions to dance elements, and the joint effect of these gives birth to a modern ritual. ’In Csaba Horváth’s works of choreography the transcendent line is no longer of a community but of an individual nature, it conveys an individual experience. The sense of being forlorn and continuously sacrificed has become the core element of the performances’, writes Ádám Mestyán. In his writing Sándor L. István analyses Etna as the ritual of human pain experienced as the essence of existence. In our critical column we write about the new performances of the ambitious contemporary choreographer Tamás Juronics, the young director using also art effects, Péter Forgách and the fringe company coming up with interesting productions for years, Atlantis Company. We give an account of the Inspiration Evening, which was aimed at discovering new choreographers.
