Volume 8. Nr. 31. 2003/1. illenten^ A Mirror to our Age This issue looks at productions tackling highly topical issues. The first section reports on the summer festival held at Zsámbék and entitled War - Now?, where each production attempted to find causes for the prevalence of war as a subject in today’s theatre. This problem is all the more sensitive in Eastern Central Europe, which has experienced war in recent years and still has to cope with its suppressed tension. This was the subject of Resolution - Study for a Dénouement written by Ernő Verebes of Vojvodina, and premiered at the festival by the Elungarian Theatre at Beregszász in Ukraine directed by Attila Vidnyánszky. The play is set in a gigantic brake works where immense titanium springs hold platforms buried underground to stop them from exploding. Another world premiere, Music of Bones by Kristóf Kovács was directed by Balázs Simon. The mosaic-like play takes place in an unnamed city and unfolds the story of degeneration, decay and the transition to death. Our second section discusses political theatre in the wake of recent politically charged new productions by the two best alternative companies in Hungary. Tamás Fodor directed The Polecat's Song for Studio “K”. The play is set in the Soviet Union of the 1930’s and reveals the workings of show trials. The company of internationally acclaimed Árpád Schilling premiered Homeland-oh-homeland, which holds up an ironic mirror to Hungarian political history since 1989. We review the productions and ask two authors, András Forgách and István Tasnádi whether they think political theatre can justify itself today and to what extent its methods have changed. Our third section looks at the Bozsik Yvette Company’s new Animal Farm, which translates Orwell’s seminal parable into dance theatre. We also carry reviews of various productions tackling current issues, looking at premieres of contemporary Hungarian (Ákos Németh) and overseas playwrights (Mark Ravenhill, Martin Mcdonagh, Urs Widmer). Our report from the Nitra Festival also gives ample space to contemporary playwrights, while our dance section includes several articles on the young Anglo- Bangladeshi choreographer, Akram Khan.
