Hungarian Research Institute of Organic Agriculture - ÖMKi Our mission PhD and postdoctoral scholarship programme The Hungarian Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (ÖMKi) works on applied research and innovation projects in order to develop and ensure the long-term competitiveness of organic farming and food industry in Hungary. We strive to establish an efficient participatory research and extension network directed towards solving real-life challenges of organic market players. Principles of ÖMKi are authenticity, innovation conducted in cooperation with producers, practice oriented research and efficient knowledge dissemination. Running on-farm trials • Cropping technologies, plant protection, and use of Hungarian varieties in organic potato production. • Cultivation and marketing opportunities for landrace tomato varieties. • Alternative plant protection methods against the cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi). • Comparison and evaluation of varieties of wheat as well as minor cereals such as emmer and einkorn - development of their production techniques. • Determining stress factors affecting organic soy-bean yields with special attention to appropriate variety selection. • Development of new grassland and vineyard cover crop seed mixtures suitable for the environmental conditions of Hungary. • Research program for varroa control in organic beekeeping Our goal is to support organic-related scientific research by young researchers. Talented young scientists conduct research with financial and professional support from ÖMKi, involving a wide range of topics. Publications • Practical technical leaflets on various topics of organic agriculture to support practices and raise awareness. • Yearly summary publication of on-farm trial results. • Journal and newspaper articles to enhance scientific and public dialogue on organic farming issues. Our activities are supported by the reliable scientific background and expertise of the Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau (FiBL Switzerland), founder of ÖMKi.
