Acta Biologies Hungarica 46 (1), pp. 3—7 (1995) On the 8th of September, 1994, many of us who knew him received the broadcast news with paralysing consternation that János Szentágothai unex­pectedly passed away in the morning. Death should never be unexpected; but the style of life and the activity he conducted, at the age of 82, have dissociated Death and his person in our imagination. He came from a family which, as it were, foretold a rich and colourful life for him. By interesting coincidence, two of his great-great-grandfathers were among the first students of the first Hungarian medical school in Nagy­szombat, Johannes Petrus Schimmert and Stephanus Lumnitzer, and their MD theses were dated 1776 and 1777, respectively. The two families gave several outstanding doctors during the past two centuries and became thus founders of a great medical dynasty.
