Gyarmathy Tihamér kiállítása (Műcsarnok, Budapest, 1986)
i ! Ennek a kiállításnak határozott karaktere van, jóllehet nekünk, a rendezőknek nem kellett sokat a fejünk törni. Gyarmathy készen hozta szellemes elgondolását. A tárlat tudniillik két külön kollekció. Bár a nyilvánosság előtt megszűnt festő lenni, Gyarmathy Tihamér tudott maradni, festett továbbra is. Kállai volt - mesélte Gyarmathy - a látszólag hallgató avantgárd magyar művészetben a kovász. (A festő emlékezését később bővebben közöljük.) Ez a régi ciklus a klasszikus szürrealizmus magyar nyelvén, pontosabban a Gyarmathy Tihamér-i idiómában beszél. Főképpen amorf befoglaló formákat, vagy azok áthatását látjuk közvetlenebb-közvetettebb utalással egy más síkú - valóságra. Ez a festészet olykor This exhibition has a definite characteristic sign albeit we - who mounted it - didn’t have to rack our brains too much about the concept: Gyarmathy brought his witty ideas ready. As a matter of fact the exhibition consists of two, separate collections. One of them was mostly painted in the fifties, when the coast was not clear for him, what is more he was prohibited from entering the terrritory of art because he continued solving the timely problems of his paintings instead of turning toward socialist realism. Namely, as a painter, he went into exile, got a job and so he could make use of his technical certification. He belonged to the few ones who were concerned, were ruined not in the least by schematic art. Though he puta stop to paint for the public, he was able to paint henceforward, to remain Tihamér Gyarmathy himself. One needs enormous moral strength to save one’s integrity and to enrich one’s own oeuvre without any hope of publicity and success just as if nothing had happened. His moral supporter was the avant-gardist critic Ernő Kállai (1890-1954), the once Bauhaus teacher of Dessau, editor of the bauhaus (this way: with small letter) periodical. Kállai was sent off his university chair in 1948 at Budapest, notaword ofhim was published, but he similarly to Gyarmathy’s attitude continued going to studios just as if nothing had happened. He was a frequent guest and critic in Gyarmathy’s studio. Gyarmathy told that Kállai had been the “leaven” in the seemingly silent Hungarian avantgarde art. Consequently the first section of the exhibition consists of paintings selected mostly by Ernő Kállai but they were not exhibited yet. This old “cycle” speaks in the Hungarian language of classical sur majdnem szó szerint, máskor átvitt értelemben, szellemében, mintegy trecsenteszk. A kiállítás másik részlege újabb, sőt legújabb, ugyancsak publikálatlan művekből áll. Legtöbbször a kétféle színtartomány egyszerre, egyenjogúan. Ezek a magjukban konstruktív, statikus táblák egyszercsak - szemünk tapasztalja - megmozdulnak, ugyanis kinetikai tartalmat rejtenek. Gyarmathy térképzése pedig oly módon történik, hogy közben intranzigensen a síkban marad, s végül ebben a többrétűségben előkelő hely jut a negyedik dimenziónak, az időnek is. A következő oldalakon Gyarmathyék gondosan megőrzött szöveggyűjteményéből közlünk hosszabb-rövidebb szemelvényeket. FRANK JÁNOS realism, more exactly in the idioms of Tihamér Gyarmathy. One can see mostly amorphous framing forms or their interference to an otherplane reality with direct and indirect reference. This kind ofpaintingis sometimes trecento-like from word to word, another time the word’s figurative sense and spirit is characteristics of the works. The other section of the exhibition consists of the newer, what’s more the newest works which were never on display. They are organic continuations of Gyarmathy’s oeuvre, there are monumental paintings and the newest one painted full of joy for the opening at the Palace of Exhibitions in July 1986. From the newer material one can “hear” the so-called Gyarmathy-style. This is an indirect geometry, a certain kind of construction which predominates over feeling and sensibility. The basis of building up the painting is using series of motives, the repetition of them make the paintings more flexible and shaded at each work (and within the work too) by variations and permutations in different ways. The fiercy and cool colours appear in bass-voice or in clear-ringing tonality. Generally the colour scale of two kinds appear simultaneously and equally. Some special depth of light is characteristics of these paintings, this certain type of luminosity can be recognized even by those who do not comprehend the works. These fundamentally constructive, static panel paintings make a move - our eyes can experience it - in a moment because they conceal kinetical contents. Gyarmathy originates the space in such a manner that he intransigent remains in the plain, therefore finally the fourth dimension, time has a high place as well. JÁNOS FRANK
