Summary A cooperative program between Hungary and Michigan (USA): Breeding of disease resistant sour cherry cultivars. The resistance to cherry leaf spot (Blumeriella jaapii Rhem v. Arx) J. Apostol és K. Véghelyi 1. Enterprise fór Research and Extension in Fruit Growing and Ornamentals, Budapest A. Iezzoni és A.L. Jones 2. Department of Botany and Plánt Pathology, Michigan State University, East Lansing Hungary and Michigan are unique in having almost similar levels of sour cherry production. Although the two growing areas separated on different continents, the major disease problem, sour cherry leaf spot, is the same. Cherry leaf spot, caused by Blumeriella jaapii Rhem v. Arx, causes leaves to become cholorotic and subsequently abscise. More kilograms per hectare of Chemicals are pút on sour cherry orchards to control this fungus disease than fór any other disease or pest of cherry. Due to the importance of the sour cherry in both Hungary and Michigan, breeding efforts are underway to develop new superior cultivars. The breeding programs share a common goal of resistance to cherry leaf spot; however, the desired fruit type differs. Clear-juiced selections are desired fór pies and pastries in the USA. In Hungary, a cherry with red juice is preferred fór the juice, canning, and fresh produce markét. In Hungary, there has existed a huge diversity of sour cherry mostly as backyard or roadside trees in villages fór centuries. Sour cherry is nőt native to the USA and there is no natural diversity. In 1991 a cooperative project was initiated to jóin the Hungárián and MSU (Michigan State University) breeding programs in their common goal of breeding fór cherry leaf spot resistance. The objectives of the project are to identify individual plánt which are resistant to cherry leaf spot fór immediate use as potential cultivars and/or parents in the breeding programs, and to determine the inheritance of this resistance.
