“I hardly know any Flungarian artists, who would rely on the possibilities hidden in meta-communication so much. This is a romantic and impressive stand to take as well as an intellectual one. (...) Moreover, the active, energetic execution of the characters and of the figures also have some spiritual sides. I mean the excitement of the contextual and emotional adventures, or the chances of honesty here. One must not forget: the extreme, overdone gestures are not good for pretending or lying. The characters are running at each other, while they are having fun or lamenting as if they had to perform on a draughty circus arena. But there is nothing to worry about: that way these passionate, restless mortals drop in front of us with their relaxed sheer nakedness.” “In the background of the present works I tend to discover Tintoretto’s art and the heritage of the mannerism. I can also recall the paintings by the soul-exploring virtuosi: Daumier or Rodin. Not to mention the dynamic and expressive portrayal by David Hockney and Lucien Freud.” “Alajos Eszik is a free man, he has never become a loyal soldier of any trends or fashion. He assumes that the state and feelings of the soul can only be expressed through depicting or portraying people. That immediacy or directness would demand honesty. When a painter is looking inside himself in order to create something new, it is not necessarily embedded in the patent revolt of the modernity revolt. The way to the very depth to the essence cannot set the formal novelty. One cannot expect an illustrator of the soul to become an avant-garde rebel. The way of art cannot always lead to the denial of tradition or to the abolition of individuality.” “Sexuality has always been present in his works as an eternal conflict. First it had a grotesque, almost morbid feature. By now this motivation has sublimated and has received a much darker and more gloomy emphasis. Erotica and mortality — Eros and Thanatos have discovered each other.” József Gaál “The characters in Alajos Eszik’s watercolours and graphic works are creatures thrown into existence and space. They are balancing without any handholds, any handrails, with no fixed points or support in a most hopeless state. There are men and women, men or women, with strong, dominant sexual features. There are potent men and omnipotent women. People are depicted as heroic scenery. They are struggling morel creatures in times when the everyday life is motivated by physical comfort and material dreams. Alajos Eszik looks at this base hedonism with some pitying, yet warm sympathy.” “Most of the time Alajos Eszik’s gallery is mainly a one-man pantomime theatre or the excerpt of a monodrama.
